In Beautiful Barcelona

Just like every other traveller who has visited this beautiful city, I have fallen irrevocably in love with the capital of Catalonia.

We started our journey with a free walking tour – and as previously mentioned… these tours meant you could pay any amount you wanted (in other words, what your conscience would be comfortable with haha).

I remember starting off at the famous Las Ramblas, the street which goes from the main Plaza Catalunya all the way to the harbour.Β It’s pretty infamous also for the amount of pickpocketing incidents that happen on that street.

The tour guide even went,

“Watch out for the pickpockets! Also sometimes you might see someone else getting pickpocketed. Just hope it is not you.”

HAHA they are so bloody nonchalant about it.

Famous Roman pillars that was apparently some old man’s living room pillar for the longest time during the 19th century before they realised it was part of the Temple of Augustus, built by the Romans even longer ago. Unfortunately I cannot find this tale online so… the tour guide must have lied to us 😦

We also visited the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, and the Placa de Sant Felip Neri is immediately alluring, yet eerily so.

Set in a tiny, shaded little square behind the Church of Sant Felip Neri, the partially ruinedΒ plaza walls almost resonate with screams, and the sound of bombs falling from the skyΒ during the Spanish Civil War.

It was a quiet and beautiful place, but seeped in so much sorrow. I took a small yellow petal with me before I left.

After the walking tour, we signed up for a Paella Cooking Class (pronounced pa-eh-ya)Β with the same company. It was a lovely way to end our first day in Barcelona πŸ™‚

market

To get the ingredients for the paella, our teacher-chef (pictured top right) brought the classΒ to St Josep La Boqueria,Β a large public market akin to our local 湿芭莎 (wet market)Β but a slightly prettier version haha! It’s accessible from the aforementioned Las Ramblas street, and filled with soooo much goodies I actually regret not setting side more time to explore the place!
